Fast food (also known as Quick Service Restaurant or QSR within the industry itself) is the term given to food that can be prepared and served very quickly. While any meal with low preparation time can be considered to be fast food, typically the term refers to food sold in a restaurant or store with preheated or precooked ingredients, and served to the customer in a packaged form for take-out/take-away. The term "fast food" was recognized in a dictionary by Merriam–Webster in 1951. l,b.

Precooked foods such as french fries or pizza typically must be used within a few hours, or they become dried out and unpalatable. The restaurant must balance availability with the expected numbers of customers, to avoid discarding unused expired product. Similarly, the food itself is often intended to be consumed quickly, using strong contrasts such dry corn chips with greasy or wet toppings that will combine into a gooey mess if stored for later consumption.

Outlets may be stands or kiosks, which may provide no shelter or seating, or fast food restaurants (also known as quick service restaurants). Franchise operations which are part of restaurant chains have standardized foodstuffs shipped to each restaurant from central locations.

The capital requirements involved in opening up a fast food restaurant are relatively low. Restaurants with much higher sit-in ratios, where customers tend to sit and have their orders brought to them in a seemingly more upscale atmosphere, may be known in some areas as fast casual restaurants.

What kinds of fast food are in italy and around the world other then mcdonalds etc?
Q. I'm doing a project about the fast food of the world but when I reserch "fast food of the world" or a certian contry all I get is articles on Mc Dobalds and those other fast food returants going all over the world...that's isn't what I want! I've found out that in eastern asia they have noodle stands and in united kingdom they have fish and chips but I would like to know the fast food of Italy.

A. There is, for the most part here in Italy, McDonalds everywhere. Then, there are Burger Kings is some places. An Italian version of fast food, though, is Spizzico, which is fast food pizza and as far as I know, doesn't exist in the states. Also, in most of the train stations, there is ChefExpress, which sell panini (sandwiches). I have actually seen vending machines selling pasta, believe it or not, and other more common vending machines sell a particular sandwich called "tramezzini." Other than that, almost all bars sell pastries in the morning and panini and coffee throughout the day, and this is the traditional "fast food" in Italy-it is not like McDonalds because the bars are privately owned, not chains. During the winter… [cont.]

Can we tell the difference between junk food and fast food?
Q. I am a Unitarian, and the food of my religion appear to be junk foods because the spiritual qualities are also religious. Even if they are nutritious, is it a good idea to ration them, or eat them in small quantities, because of their halluciogenic properties? I know that junk foods are unhealthy, and I do not eat such foods, but a Big Mac can be mistaken for a garage burger of sorts. Please help me draw the line such as, "One makes you fat, the other makes you high. One has cholesterol, the other has LSD" and so on. Given the obesity epidemic, I do not wish for an underground movement to replace all fast food chains if fast food was outlawed, especially to ensure the health of our fellow citizens. Please help, for I am also a… [cont.]

Is there ANY way to send fast food to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan?
Q. I have family in both Iraq and afghanistan and both say they would love fast food. I cant think of any way for me to get that to them. It wont stay frozen because its so hot, i cant over night food because I know it doesnt over night directly to where they are and the food would get moldy. Does anyone have any ideas how I could send them fast food?? I know its probably nearly impossible but I would love to try.

A. The closest you could get to that is finding something in the supermarket that is vaccum-wrapped and doesn't require refrigeration to send to them. As for actual food from a McDonald's or Burger King, forget about it. It would be spoiled before it even got to Kuwait. Most of the bigger bases over there have Burger King and Pizza Hut on it anyway and a lot of the dining facilities have a short order line that serves burgers and fries. The one ones really missing out are the ones who live on Combat Outposts and Patrol Bases where they don't have the big dining facilities.
