i used knox gelatin for the first time in my mohawk; can i get it wet in the shower without ruining it?
Q. supposedly knox keeps your hair up for a week or more. i'm wondering if i should shower and get it wet, or cover it up somehow. will water hurt the gelatin's affects?

A. It will get ruined. And even more especially with warm or hot water. I bake frequently and sometimes use gelatin in my recipes, like puddings and mousses. They need to be kept cold and if something warm or hot is poured on them they lose their gelatinous quality and become liquid again. I think it's more of a style that you don't wash unless you want to do it over, so that's why it will last you a week. Eventually from sleeping on it, indoor and outdoor temperatures it will probably start to break down after a few days to a week. Try plain old gel instead. Or...there is another product that works excellent! When my hair was shorter and more Punk/Goth I always spiked it in the back. It would stay for hours, even into the next day, or… [cont.]

A. Agar or agar agar is a gelatinous substance derived from seaweed. Historically and in a modern context, it is chiefly used as an ingredient in desserts throughout Japan, but in the past century has found extensive use as a solid substrate to contain culture medium for microbiological work. The gelling agent is an unbranched polysaccharide obtained from the cell walls of some species of red algae, primarily from the genera Gelidium and Gracilaria, or seaweed (Sphaerococcus euchema). Commercially it is derived primarily from Gelidium amansii. Where Gelatin is a protein produced by partial hydrolysis of collagen extracted from the bones, connective tissues, organs, and some intestines of animals such as domesticated cattle, pigs, and horses.… [cont.]

Does Knox Plain Gelatin need to be refrigerated?
Q. I made this cell out of gelatin and clay and foam and stuff. Nothing is edible, but the gelatin... Well, actually it's not anymore because of the craft colouring I put in it. Does it need to be refrigerated and will it go bad? -- There's no sugar or anything in it. Just plain gelatin. Thanks!

A. Hi unwritten, if it is not going to be eaten then the only thing that i can think of is watch out for the heat as gelatin will melt.It will also depend on how concentrated it is as to how 'stable' it will be and how long your model will last. When working with gelatine as a food substance, remember gelatine (although sterile for hospitals), Is used to grow cultures on for bacterial testing of viruses etc. so you have to be aware of the risks when using it for food. It is used just for that reason at it is possible to grow cultures on it in a few hours.I hope this helps. All the best. Rab.
