A colloid is a type of chemical mixture in which one substance is dispersed evenly throughout another.

A colloidal system consists of two separate phases: a dispersed phase (or internal phase) and a continuous phase (or dispersion medium). A colloidal system may be solid, liquid, or gaseous.

Many familiar substances are colloids, as shown in the chart below. As well as these naturally occurring colloids, modern chemical process industries utilise high shear mixing technology to create novel colloids.

The dispersed-phase particles have a diameter of between approximately 5 and 200 nanometers. Such particles are normally invisible to an optical microscope, though their presence can be confirmed with the use of an ultramicroscope or an electron microscope. Homogeneous mixtures with a dispersed phase in this size range may be called colloidal aerosols, colloidal emulsions, colloidal foams, colloidal dispersions, or hydrosols. The dispersed-phase particles or droplets are affected largely by the surface chemistry present in the colloid.

Some colloids are translucent because of the Tyndall effect, which is the scattering of light by particles in the colloid. Other colloids may be opaque or have a slight color.

Colloidal systems (also called colloidal solutions or colloidal suspensions) are the subject of interface and colloid science. This field of study was introduced in 1861 by Scottish scientist Thomas Graham.

Can anyone tell me the difference between colloid and emulsion??
Q. I really need information about these two! Its for our exam.. I just want to be familiarized with the terms and its functions/uses. Cause its useless if I just memorize without knowing what the term means or what it does.. ehehe,

A. A colloid is a type of mechanical mixture where one substance is dispersed evenly throughout another. Because of this dispersal, some colloids have the appearance of solutions. A colloidal system consists of two separate phases: a dispersed phase (or internal phase) and a continuous phase (or dispersion medium). A colloidal system may be solid, liquid, or gaseous. An emulsion (IPA: / m l n/[1]) is a mixture of two immiscible (unblendable) substances. One substance (the dispersed phase) is dispersed in the other (the continuous phase). Examples of emulsions include butter and margarine, milk and cream, espresso, mayonnaise, the photo-sensitive side of photographic film, magmas and cutting fluid for metal working. In butter and margarine,… [cont.]

A. Every colloid has 2 parts. One part is the continuous material and the other part is the dispersed material. The 4 examples of colloids given in the book Chemistry for Dummies are marshmallows, whipped cream, fog, and smoke. Beating cream (a liquid) with a hand mixer puts air (a gas obviously) into the mix hence whipped cream is a "gas-in-a-liquid" colloid. The continuous material is the cream and the dispersed material is the air which is spread throughout the cream. Marshmallow is a "gas-in-a-solid" colloid. Smoke is a solid-in-a-gas type colloid. Fog is a liquid-in-a-gas colloid. The solute particle (i.e. the dispersed material) size in colloids is 100 nm to 1000 nm (at least it is according to ). This places them inbetween solutions… [cont.]
