Can I defrost chicken in the microwave tonight and leave it in the fridge over night?
Q. I have frozen chicken that I want to defrost so I can cut it up tonight. Tomorrow morning I want to stick it in my slow cooker, but I don't want to have to cut up chicken in the morning. Is it a bad idea to defrost the chicken and then leave it in the fridge overnight?

A. The best way to thaw anything is in the refrigerator. Another way, is to soak it in cold water for approximately 1 hour. The third way, is to defrost it in the microwave. All of those are totally acceptable ways to defrost. Once defrosted it is fine to cut it up and leave it in the refrigerator. It will be good to go People do that all the time if they have a slow cooker they want to set before they go to work. So, whatever is the easiest is usually the best. :)

Is it wasteful to defrost hamburgers by running hot water over them?
Q. I want to cook hamburgers but I don't want to wait for them to defrost. I was just going to run hot water over them to defrost them.

A. Have your woman carry the frozen hamburgers under her arms for about 15 minutes. That will save hot water and protect our ecosystem. High five!!

Do I have to defrost homemade meatballs before cooking?
Q. I made some meatballs yesterday. I put them in the freezer because they have egg. Today I want to cook them for lunch, and wonder if it's necessary to defrost them, because frozen meatballs that you get at the supermarket don't need to be defrosted. The ones I made are going to be fried before cooking them completely with the spaghetti sauce.
Asked by scarlett - Mon Oct 29 18:55:38 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You do not have to defrost them. Just fry then and then add to the sauce. It will take a little longer to cook. Next time, fry the meatball before you freeze them, like that you can just add them to the sauce when you need them and save time.

What is the best way to defrost bread?
Q. I froze some bread a month ago (I wrapped it in saran wrap, then foil, and a freezer ziplock bag) and now I want to defrost it. I don't want to know the fastest way to defrost it, just the way to do it so it turns out the most normal.

A. throw it on the counter for 15 min to a half hour. bread defrosts really fast. better still take out of all packaging, drape clean dish towel over. this will avoid condensation in the bag.

How to defrost bacon and what it should be like when it is?
Q. Sounds abit silly but we usually just keep it in the fridge so i've never had to defrost it before. How will I know when it's defrosted?
Asked by Kirsty F - Sat Apr 25 09:32:12 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments
A. As long as its defrosted enough to get slices off it you can start cooking, as its only thin you dont have to worry about it not cooking in the middle. If its still like a solid brick frozen, leave it for a bit, or you can put it in the microwave on defrost for about 30 seconds - 1 minute to soften it up

A. Good grief people get it right. The defrost cycle on a normal residential refrigerator/freezer is 20-30 minutes. If it was in defrost for hours the heaters in the freezer would heat it up until everything was thawed and the ice was melted! 8 hours and you would have to throw away all your meat!

How do you defrost a minifridge?
Q. We have a minifridge at work that needs defrosting - the freezer compartment is completely iced over. How do I defrost it, step by step, please, without having the ice melt and drip all over the floor, creating huge pools of water?
Asked by Charlie L - Tue May 23 10:34:58 2006 - - 16 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Only way to defrost is to leave it opened with the power off. Try leaning it back a little so the water stays in when it's done defrosting. If it's a mini fridge you should be able to pick it up and dump the water outside when it's done.

Q. Not sure of the weight? Should I defrost by putting it in the fridge or in the sink?

A. ***Do not defrost anything on the counter top or the sink. *** by the time the center is thawed the outside will have been in the danger zone for HOURS. you can put it in a sink of water, but you need to have running water. so keeping the sink drain open just enough to not over flow it is a pain. put it in the fridge about 3 days before you bake it. Personally i bake my birds par-frozen. it makes them more juicy.

Asked by red - Wed Jul 2 18:43:18 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Put it in a ziplock or seaaled bag and run cold or average heat water but NTO warm or hot water. You want to defrost it, not cook it and yes, warm or hot water will have enough chemical reaction to slightly cook the meat and get a chance for bacteria to grow so dont do it! The cold water is still gonna be warmer than it being frozen and will thaw it out faster without growing bacteria. Put it under a fawcet so that the water can constantly flow over it and not change temperatures. If you leave it in water that isnt flowing, the water may get room temp. and that would make it warm... not good!

How can I tell if rear window defrost is working?
Q. I had rear defrost repaired. I turned it on to see if the glass would warm up, it didn't. When I called the shop, they said it didn't work that way, so I turned on rear defrost on my other car, and it didn't get warm either, I know that one works though. How does rear defrost work if it doesn't warm up the glass?

A. If you have a simple voltmeter then I would suggest testing the actual defroster grid. It would let you know if the problem is the defroster itself, or something before it such as the fuse, switch, or wiring leading to the defroster. Here is a nice instruction on how to test the defroster and instructions on how to fix the grid if it is broken. It is common for the grid to get broken when bumped by things such as cargo or feet (lol)! If the grid does not get any power then you need to check the fuse, switch and wiring in that order. This is a very crude but effective way-- IF you don't have a volt meter then fog up the window by putting an ice cube against the outside of it and making it nice and cold. Have someone else go inside… [cont.]

A. Wow, everyone got it wrong. You don't use hot or warm water - you use cool water. Specifically, running cool water. If the bacon is still in the package and water tight, put it in the sink and run a stream of cool - not hot - water on it so it runs over most of the package. Flip the package every 5 minutes or so. You can also use a ziplock bag - just make sure to get all the air out before sealing, so that the water can come in contact with the bacon better. It should be mostly thawed in 15-20 minutes. Why cool running water, and not a pan of warm/hot? If you put the bacon in a pan of hot water, yes, some heat will transfer into the bacon, but then what will happen is there'll be a thin layer of cooler water around the bacon -… [cont.]

How does a push button defrost refrigerator work?
Q. I'm concerned mainly with compact fridges; I know there are two types of fridges when it comes to defrost type: manual, and push button. I know how to defrost a fridge manually, but how do the push button models work? Does the fridge heat up causing the ice to melt and the water is drained through some kind of system into a container that you must empty? I have no idea, please tell and thank you! :)
Asked by Michael - Sun Jun 13 11:06:26 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The push button defrost is actually what I would call a semi-automatic defrost. Basically, you push the button and the freezer defrosts. There is no need to change the temperature setting so you do not need to worry about other items warming up. The freezer drains into a catch pan below. When the defrost cycle is complete, the push button automatically resets itself.

How do I defrost my freezer without unplugging it?
Q. I have a freezer on top of my refrigerator, and don't want to have to turn it off or unplug it to defrost my freezer. My freezer has chunks of ice in the back and I need to know how to get them out, so please leave me step-by-step instructions on how I can do this.
Asked by key-ruhhh ; - Sun Mar 22 14:21:55 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You may not have to UNPLUG your refrigerator to defrost it but you'll definitely need to turn it off -- it's much, much, MUCH more energy efficient if you do one of the two. Generally it only takes a little while for the ice to melt enough for you to safely scrape it out without damaging the pipes carrying the coolant in the freezer. If you're worried about food in your refrigerator going bad while you're defrosting your freezer, don't. Keep the refrigerator door closed and it will stay cold inside. The temperature may raise a degree or two or three, but not enough to cause the food to be unsafe.

If you're worried about food in your refrigerator going bad while you're defrosting your freezer, don't. Keep the refrigerator door closed and it will stay cold inside. The temperature may raise a degree or two or three, but not enough to cause the food to be unsafe.
