Why do I get food poisoning from fast food places?
Q. I eat a lot at fast food places and I've noticed that I get frequent food poisonings lately. In about 50% cases of eating there I get a diarreah the next day. In about 5% I throw up, have temperature and cannot eat anything for a few days - stomach flue? And it is the same for fast food and upscale restaurants. The only places I dont get a food poisoning is in my company's cafeteria (that has mostly fast food) and the best restaurants in Seattle, where I live?

A. Be careful where you eat. Some places do not enforce sanitary practices as much as other places. If one of the employees doesn't wash their hands after going to the bathroom, touching money, or pretty much touching anything other than food, the food you eat can become contaminated. Or, if one of the employees is sick already, and touches your food, it can make you sick, too. I work in the food service industry and I am very strict with my employees to make sure they wash their hands often. However, lazy managers who don't care or employees who don't care will cause problems. Other than that, you may be eating too many fatty, greasy foods, and your body is sending you a message. Fast food is very unhealthy and you should only eat it once… [cont.]

What kinds of fast food are in italy and around the world other then mcdonalds etc?
Q. I'm doing a project about the fast food of the world but when I reserch "fast food of the world" or a certian contry all I get is articles on Mc Dobalds and those other fast food returants going all over the world...that's isn't what I want! I've found out that in eastern asia they have noodle stands and in united kingdom they have fish and chips but I would like to know the fast food of Italy.

A. There is, for the most part here in Italy, McDonalds everywhere. Then, there are Burger Kings is some places. An Italian version of fast food, though, is Spizzico, which is fast food pizza and as far as I know, doesn't exist in the states. Also, in most of the train stations, there is ChefExpress, which sell panini (sandwiches). I have actually seen vending machines selling pasta, believe it or not, and other more common vending machines sell a particular sandwich called "tramezzini." Other than that, almost all bars sell pastries in the morning and panini and coffee throughout the day, and this is the traditional "fast food" in Italy-it is not like McDonalds because the bars are privately owned, not chains. During the winter… [cont.]

Have the warnings about Fast Food and Pizza prompted you to diet?
Q. Have the recent studies and evidence about the health risks associated with fast food and pizza, changed your eating habits? If so, beforehand, how often did you eat fast food in any one week? How often do you eat it now?, and are you planning to alter your diet anytime soon?
Asked by Emocide Organ - Thu Jan 8 14:46:47 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. My father becoming diabetic prompted me to diet. Halfway through my diet, I saw "Supersize Me", but at that point I'd already cut out most fast food. That prompted me to cut it out entirely. Pre-diet, I probably had fast food 4-5 times per week... (It might be worth noting that I'm a college student and couldn't cook in a dorm.) I was 150lbs, 5'5''. Now, I eat it maybe 1-2 times per week and always choose something healthier (i.e. Chick-fil-a chargrilled chicken w/ baked chips, salad with my own bought dressing, etc.) I am now about 121lbs, and I've kept that weight off since August. My shift was a lifestyle change and I never intend to let myself get that unhealthy again!

Why is fast food not the same as restaurant food in terms of health?
Q. For those that don't eat fast food because it's unhealthy, do you eat at restaurants? If so, how is that food different from fast food? I'm not saying it isn't, I just want to know. If there is any food from a restaurant that would be just as bad as fast food, what factor decides if its too unhealthy to eat? (with fast food being the standard as too unhealthy to eat) Also, what makes food cooked at home healthier than fast food? What factors decide whether the food cooked at home is relatively healthy or unhealthy?

A. 1. Fast food uses a lot of preservatives in order to keep it from spoiling. All those preservatives are not good for you. 2. Fast food often used processed food, which has been link to cancer. Not all processed food is bad. 3. Fast food often means deep fried, and all that fat can't be good for you. Restaurant foods are somewhat healthier than fast foods because the food is prepared fresh when you order it. The food tend to have less preservatives, and they're usually not processed. Hopefully the oil isn't reused over and over again. Once oil reaches past it's smoking point, it becomes bad to your health. Homemade food is usually healthier because you control what goes in it. If you don't want to use MSG, you don't have to. [cont.]

How do I avoid food while working at a fast food restaurant?
Q. I am currently in high school and i work many hours at a fast food restaurant. I am trying to lose weight and exercise regularly, but working at the fast food restaurant seems to get in the way. I find myself eating the fries and ice cream, and it is almost impossible to tell myself no. Does anyone have tips on how to fight this?

A. I have to say that when I worked at the Dairy Queen in high school, it took several weeks. After making the food, coming home smelling like burgers, it wasn't hard to skip eating meals at work. I would bring fruit to snack on... Maybe you need to make a break. Bring healthy snacks to nibble on when you get hungry. Make a conscious effort to not eat fast food. Make a health choice and stop drinking pop & milk shakes! Only drink water when you are working... Good luck! I know this will be hard but you CAN do it!!!

Why are fast food restaurants appealing to all levels of society?
Q. I've noticed that my favorite fast food restaurant is patronized by all the social classes. You see everyone from down-and-out bums to executives in expensive suits. There's a junker car stuffed with a big family in the drive-through line, and right behind is a brand new sports cars with a rich-looking driver. It has to be something besides price and speed of service that attracts customers. What is it?
Asked by Miz D - Fri Jul 16 22:55:57 2010 - - 19 Answers - 0 Comments
A. For me the appeal is the fast food--especially the salads and the coffee and the bagel. I really like the workers and most are friends of mine and know me by name. I too have noticed the diversity of people at my local drive through ---the homeless and the rich and the middle class.

What part of the fast food industry is most interesting to look into?
Q. I am reading Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. I need to write an essay on a specific part of the fast food industry back then, and compare it to present day. I just need a few ideas on what you think is most interesting to look into in the fast food industry. Thanks

A. Fast Food way back in the beginning was all about hamburgers and fries. Now just about any type of food can be found in fast food styles. Food will only continue to get "faster" in this country because that's what people demand.

Why are people so down on fast food? Why do people blame fast food for being fat?
Q. What do people have against fast food? I am really sick of reading things people write on here about how fast food makes people fat. Well, sure it does if you eat it every single day!!! If you only eat it once or twice or maybe even three times a week you should be fine. I eat fast food 1-3 times a week and I am not fat because I am always on the move. Why do people blame fast food for their weight? Please somebody explain this to me?
Asked by DisneyBride - Mon Nov 5 18:02:55 2007 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Okay, even if you can eat it three times a week and not get fat, it is NOT good for you. It's full of preservatives and trans fats which are negatively affecting your heart, your arteries, your liver, etc. Remember, you can't always see outwards evidence of what is going on in your body. You don't have to be fat to be unhealthy.

Also a very good tip which you probably do NOT follow is to eat breakfast Breakfast is exacly what it is spelled out to be Break Fast A fast is a long period without food and once you get food it stores it as fat so if eat earlier even something fairly small it breaks the fast so all the food you eat later is not stored as fat. 1 more thing you should learn to like cooking unless you can afford a personal chief, Nobody actually hates cooking they get bored waiting when they have something they like… [cont.]

A. What about a tub of salad. Chicken fillet on a salad sandwich on brown is also another alternative. But hold the mayo. can you throw some fresh fruit in your bag, or have some on your desk for when you feel like a snack. Apples are great for that. If you must eat fast food, go the Subway, but once again hold the mayo.

What is it like working at a fast food restaurant?
Q. I am 16 and will probably take a summer job working at a fast food restaurant. What working conditions can I expect? What are certain things will I be expected to do there? I'm thinking I don't like the idea of taking food orders from customers. Will I have to do that, or are there other things to do, besides that? And if I do take orders will I have to prepare the food in the kitchen or does someone else do it?

Is there ANY way to send fast food to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan?
Q. I have family in both Iraq and afghanistan and both say they would love fast food. I cant think of any way for me to get that to them. It wont stay frozen because its so hot, i cant over night food because I know it doesnt over night directly to where they are and the food would get moldy. Does anyone have any ideas how I could send them fast food?? I know its probably nearly impossible but I would love to try.

A. The closest you could get to that is finding something in the supermarket that is vaccum-wrapped and doesn't require refrigeration to send to them. As for actual food from a McDonald's or Burger King, forget about it. It would be spoiled before it even got to Kuwait. Most of the bigger bases over there have Burger King and Pizza Hut on it anyway and a lot of the dining facilities have a short order line that serves burgers and fries. The one ones really missing out are the ones who live on Combat Outposts and Patrol Bases where they don't have the big dining facilities.

What fast-food burgers are best when eaten as leftovers?
Q. What fast-food do you think keeps best as leftovers? Fries never keep you just gotta throw them away. But what about cheeseburgers? Burger king burgers taste really weird if they are more than a few hours old. Wendy's on the other hand tastes about the same even after microwaving. I don't know about other places yet. What do you think is best?

What items on a typical fast food menu carry the most calories?
Q. For instance, a large chocolate milkshake at McDonald's has a whopping 1000+ calories, making it their most high-calorie menu item. I was wondering what has the most calories from other restaurants/fast food joints.

A. Look into the book "Eat This, Not That". It breaks down the best and worst foods at all chain restaurants. It even gives you a breakdown and comparison of different things at your grocery store. For example, a Big Mac is not nearly as bad for you as a Whopper. It's a good bathroom book!
