Can you keep a chest freezer in an outbuilding?
Q. I need a freezer but do not have the room in my kitchen. What I do have however, is sort of conservatory that in the winter is very cold and in the summer is very hot. I have heard that you can get fridges to use in extreme temperatures, is this also true with freezers? I am looking for a medium sized chest freezer but have had no luck in finding one in the UK to use in extreme temperatures. can I just use a normal chest freezer? Are they all suitable for this kind of use?

How long is Pork good for in the freezer?
Q. I put center cut pork chops in Ziploc freezer bags. How long can they stay good in the freezer? And how to tell if they have been freezer-burned? If they are freezer burned, is it safe to eat, or should I throw them out? I sure don't want to get me and my family sick.

How to prevent freezer from building up frost?
Q. 3 foot fridge/freezer (same compartment) fitted into a confined non ventilated frame in the kitchen (just like any other kitchen). Freezer builds up frost madly although thermostat is set to 65% of minimum temperature. Any ideas/remedies?
Asked by Ismaeliano - Wed Dec 26 14:16:19 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Frost builds up due to moisture in the room air. Warm air holds moisture better than cold air. When the door is opened, cold air pours out near the bottom, and warm room air replaces it. You close the door, the freezer chills the air, and moisture is deposited in the form of frost. Minimizing humidity in the room helps. So does limiting the number of times the freezer door is opened, and how long it is open. You can put a sheet of plastic or similar, vertically in front of lower shelves, and keep seldom used things on those shelves. This minimizes the amount of air exchanged when the door is opened. Also wipe any wet things prior to putting them in the freezer.

How do you adjust freezer temperature on Frigidaire upright freezer?
Q. The freezer is about 25 years old, but works like a charm. There is a dial that starts with "off" and then goes to the number 7, and counts downward to 1. I'm trying to figure out which is colder, the 7 or the 1. If i had lots of time, i could just ty both, but am trying to freeze some items for a party tomorrow and need to crank it up a bit to get some things frozen.
Asked by dangetwired40 - Fri Jul 18 21:26:54 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Higher numbers are for colder settings. Keep in mind that it will take about the same length of tiem to freeze an item regardless of whether you set it to 5 or 7. 7 just results in a colder freeze temperature.

If my freezer was left slightly open all night is the food no good anymore?
Q. When I awoke this morning I notifed my freezer was cracked open. When I opened it to look inside I noticed that my ice cream had melted all over. My frozen burgers were defrosted. I have tons of lean cuisine meals in there. Everything still felt cold, but soft. Do I need to throw all that food away? Or can I re freeze it? Thanks for your help.
Asked by Red - Mon Oct 8 10:29:35 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If it is still partly frozen, it is still good. It wouldn't spoil that fast . It is still good to cook but you shouldn't refreeze if it's mostly thawed.

Can lingering shrimp smell in a freezer enter into wrapped food in the freezer?
Q. I got a used freezer it smelled fine until we washed it out and had the lid shut for a few days. The freezer was off without any food during this time. It used to be a grocery shrimp box freezer. I believe that some of the insulation inside the freezer may have got we, cause there is a tiny space where the metal joins together on the inside of the freezer. Why does it only smell after the lid is shut? Would you use it or throw it out?

Q. I am just trying to find simple freezer meal recipes that my kids and I can make together?
Asked by Leorita - Sun Sep 9 01:40:05 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I freeze nearly everything I cook for easy freezer meals. Chili, and most other stews and soups work well. Lasagna is also a good one. Pancakes and waffles for breakfast. Meatballs are best when flash frozen on cookie sheets first so they stay seperated. Some pasta does well, others not so good... experiment. I use ziplock bags and gladware containers. I usually only cook once or twice a month and freeze enough food to last several weeks.

How long is hamburger good in my freezer, if left in store packaging?
Q. When I bring hamburger home from the grocery store, I usually put one package in the freezer for that night, and the others in the freezer. How long can they be left in that packaging (the styrofoam dish with plastic wrap seal on top) in the freezer? This is driving me nuts, so you will be very appreciated!
Asked by Ami - Mon Apr 23 13:24:51 2007 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It'll last a month or so in the store packaging, but will eventually get freezer burn. If you want it to last longer (about three to four months), take it out of the packaging, wrap the meat tightly in plastic wrap and place in a freezer safe ziplok bag with the air squeezed out.

I have a freezer for food, that has rust stains inside it,how can i get rid of the rust stains?
Q. Is it safe to put frozen food in the freezer,if i cannot remove the rust stains?
Asked by bluesky - Thu Jul 24 09:14:35 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am not familiar on the latest chemicals to remove rust. Me, it would have been - unplug /MT freezer /sand out rust and then Tremclad paint the area and force dry it with hair dryer. Rust only happens when water forms(meaning freezer is not freezing). Other than that, there is no harm in having the rust stain there. Just put a plastic bread bag over the area and it won't come in contact with the food if you are worried. They are in bags or wrapped up as well too, right? Rust is the finished process of the steel.(Iron oxide)

How come my freezer door get hard to open the second time opening it?
Q. I opened my freezer door to get some meat out of it, then i went back to get some vegetables but it was hard to open. This always happens the second time opening it. I cant understand it, i mean it doesnt yam or anything like that it justs so hard to open the second time.
Asked by Scotty 2 Shoes - Thu Apr 12 02:59:36 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The first time you opened the door, warm air entered and, when you closed it again the air inside cooled and contracted and caused a partial vacuum that 'pulled' the door closed tighter. (The seals must be good).

A. The normal temperature for a fridge is around 3 - 5 deg c and for a freezer it's around -15 to -19. Don't trust the Gauge on the unit try and get one that you can place inside the fridge. Do you still have the instruction manual? Maybe you can set the temp even lower to compensate. You could try phoning a couple of domestic appliance engineers to see what the cost of a repair might bee, although the way things are today it's probably just as well to look at purchasing a new one. Good luck. Warm spots on the side of a fridge/freezer is normal, this is normally the refrigerant inside the internal pipe work

How do I keep my refrigerator cooling elements and my freezer box from frosting?
Q. I am renting an apartment which came with an older refrigerator/freezer, and I'll be moving across the country in about three months, so I don't want to buy a new fridge, but my coolilng elements in the fridge recently starting frosting up, and even after melting the huge chunk of ice and cleaning it out, it immediately starting frosting up again after I turned it back on. This is not a "frost free" fridge, btw. Is there some old-fashioned way to keep this from happening? I have the same problem with the freezer (one of those older "freezer box" types).
Asked by Jen - Tue Aug 29 18:46:17 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The way it cools is that the freon passes thorough the freezer and then goes into the refig section. If the freezer is full of frost that makes the freon coming Into the refig colder making an ice ball on the cooling plate in the refig. If the doors don't seal or the light stays on in the refig you will get excessive frost build up. To check the doors, take a dollar bill and close the door on part of it. Pull it out. If you don't feel some resistance, the door isn't sealing there. If the gasket isn't riped than you should be able to adjust the door to make it seal again. Don't forget to check the gasket at the bottom of the door. There's no way to make it stop frosting up. You can just slow it down. The less your in it the less it… [cont.]

Q. Our freezer temperature rose all of a sudden and I was wondering why. It's fluctuating at around 25 degrees which is too high and I would need to have someone fix it unless it's a problem I can fix myself. What are some reasons this would happen?

A. There is probably a thermostat somewhere . Maybe it got bumped or changed somehow. Perhaps the freezer is low on coolant. I doubt if you could fix that yourself, though.

A. The unit should be cooled to the proper temperature in 6 hours or so. Wait longer if you will be placing food that is not frozen already, into it. Remember that the fuller you keep the freezer, the cheaper it will be to operate.
