If I use a chest freezer for most of my food items, what can I use my regular freezer for? Just ice?
Q. I just bought a chest freezer to have more capacity for frozen foods that I can store more long term. Now that I've transferred my items from my refrigerator's freezer to my chest freezer, nothing is left in the upright besides my ice trays. What do people use their regular freezer for if they have this other option?

Can you keep a chest freezer in an outbuilding?
Q. I need a freezer but do not have the room in my kitchen. What I do have however, is sort of conservatory that in the winter is very cold and in the summer is very hot. I have heard that you can get fridges to use in extreme temperatures, is this also true with freezers? I am looking for a medium sized chest freezer but have had no luck in finding one in the UK to use in extreme temperatures. can I just use a normal chest freezer? Are they all suitable for this kind of use?

How long will things keep in my freezer?
Q. I just bought a chest freezer and plan to stock it. If I buy things prepackaged in vacuum sealed plastic, like Omaha steaks, or a package of hot dogs, how long will they keep in the freezer? Also, if I buy things from the butcher counter - steaks, chicken, pork, etc, and then freezer wrap them myself, how long will they last?

A. Food can last up to a year or more. Do not forget to put the date on them and occasionally rearrange them so the older items get used up first.

What determines the difference between a Freezer and a Refridgerator?
Q. Is there a certain temperature for something to be that makes it a freezer? If that's what it is, what are the exact ranges of temp for a fridge and a freezer?
Asked by fanepretentions - Fri Jul 28 17:58:02 2006 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Freezers freeze (below 0C or 32F), fridges just keep things cool (about 4C, don't know the F). Exact ranges they are capable of vary model to model.

What difference does freezer burn make?
Q. If something has freezer burn on the outside is it back to cook. Does it taste gross? Is it still good?
Asked by D - Thu Jan 24 20:18:52 2008 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Freezer burn," a condition in which the surface of food appears light-colored and dried out, occurs when moisture on the surface evaporates. Proper cooling, air removal, moisture-vapor-resistant packaging, a tight seal and an appropriate length of storage help prevent freezer burn. Keep your freezer at 0 F or lower. While a food with freezer burn is safe to eat, the quality is lower. You can cut away freezer burn spots either before or after cooking. If a food is heavily freezer-burned, it may be desirable to discard it for quality reasons.

My Beko fridge freezer has warm spots on the outside near the top of the freezer door?
Q. It's temperature is flahing at 9, which is the highest even though I Ihave it set for 4c. Ice cream in the freezer is soft but not runny. In the fridge, milk seems to be oing off quicker than usual. Please can anyone help me? Should I buy a new fridge freezer or repair this one? This appliance is about five years old. Thank you.

A. The normal temperature for a fridge is around 3 - 5 deg c and for a freezer it's around -15 to -19. Don't trust the Gauge on the unit try and get one that you can place inside the fridge. Do you still have the instruction manual? Maybe you can set the temp even lower to compensate. You could try phoning a couple of domestic appliance engineers to see what the cost of a repair might bee, although the way things are today it's probably just as well to look at purchasing a new one. Good luck. Warm spots on the side of a fridge/freezer is normal, this is normally the refrigerant inside the internal pipe work

How can I get rid of fish odor in my freezer/refrigerator?
Q. I had frozen fish in my RV freezer - refrigerator/freezer stopped working and it was a couple of days before I realized it was not working. The fish defrosted - I've cleaned with baking soda and put charcoal in the freezer but cannot get rid of the odor.
Asked by Annabelle - Wed Mar 21 22:30:31 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Better idea - You mentioned charcoal. There are different types and some just work better. I have the perfect product that I've used for years and know dozens of other people that use it. It is a product called fridge it odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great. It works so much better than baking soda and all those sprays and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Also, alot of sprays have warning statements about being eye irritant. The carbon literally absorbs and eliminates the odors and works for a long time. Just place a couple in fridge and freezer. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage,… [cont.]

How can I disconnect the freezer from a full-size fridge?
Q. I have an old Kelvinator fridge with a compact freezer that doesn't have it's own thermostat. I have to keep defrosting it every 3 months or I can't close the plastic door. A few days ago that door finally broke off. Now I KNOW there is a way to disconnect it as someone did it where I used to work. What I'd like to know is, do I call an electrician or appliance repair to get it done? Older than dirt, that's funny. Ok what if I turn the temperature all the way down and find some way of fixing the inner door? I'm so poor I can't even pay attention, so getting another fridge at this point is impossible.
Asked by polgara_ontario - Sun May 27 15:57:55 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The freezer cools the rest of the refrigerator. There is no way to disconnect it. In fact without the door it will get colder in the refrigerator.

How does one troubleshoot a blocked coolant line in a chest freezer?
Q. I have a 5 year old small chest freezer I got second hand. When I plug it in I hear the compressor come on (it's fairly quiet) and I hear coolant circulating but only one part of the freezer gets cold at all. I suspect there is a blockage in the cooling coil running through the freezer. How does one go about un-blocking this?

How can you tell if a roast has freezer burn?
Q. I have a roast that has been in the freezer for about two weeks, when I took it out, I noticed the plastic wrap had been punctured. The meat had ice crystals all over it. I've thawed the roast out and it has a brown spot in the middle. Is this freezer burn? Should I bother cooking it or will the whole thing taste bad? Thanks for any relevant advice!
Asked by beebemama23 - Thu Nov 6 09:02:21 2008 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. it is a paler, lighter color spot on the meat. Sometimes you see ice crystals right there. I usually throw away freezer burnt stuff. I just can't get past it myself.

What are some reasons the freezer temperature rises all of a sudden?
Q. Our freezer temperature rose all of a sudden and I was wondering why. It's fluctuating at around 25 degrees which is too high and I would need to have someone fix it unless it's a problem I can fix myself. What are some reasons this would happen?
Asked by freshhhhhhieeee - Sun Jan 10 13:35:23 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is probably a thermostat somewhere . Maybe it got bumped or changed somehow. Perhaps the freezer is low on coolant. I doubt if you could fix that yourself, though.

If I load up my freezer with frozen stuff, will it run its cooling cycle less frequently?
Q. For example, if I put in a few bags of ice, would the freezer come on less often (by come on I mean start its freezing process) or as much as it does now, when its nearly empty? Basically this would be to save energy by getting the freezer to run less often. Its a typical freezer on the top of a refrigerator. I've already turned down temperature dial, I'm just looking for additional ways to get it to run less.
Asked by Hooray for Everything - Sat Sep 22 20:40:52 2007 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. The phrase you are looking for is Thermal Mass. The more thermal mass there is, the longer it will hold a given temperature. So yes, a few bags of ice will have it running less. Having more stuff on the fridge side will help to. Keep in mind however that on a refrigerator, the freezer and fridge share the same system, so opening the door to the fridge side will still cause the unit to run, even if the freezer is still plenty cold.
