Frozen Chicken?
Q. I have a whole chicken in the freezer the sell by date is Dec 06, you think I can cook it or is it too late???
Asked by Liz - Mon Oct 29 16:47:29 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A year (or so) is not too long for frozen chicken, assuming it was frozen properly. The enemy is air: small pockets of air within the packaging lead to freezer-burned spots. If the chicken was in it's original plastic wrapper---that thick, heavy-duty stuff---it should be OK when thawed. That material is design to guard against freezer burn. If the chicken is wrapped in butcher paper, it's likely that there is air inside the packaging, so there will probably be "burned" spots.

How long does frozen chicken stay good?
Q. Hi, I was wondering how long frozen chicken stays good in the freezer. I forgot I had chicken in the freezer and I want to cook it up! Any help will be appreciated! Thanks. It has been in the freezer for almost two months, if that helps!

A. It stays good for approximately 3-4 months but it's eatable around 1 year. Wouldn't recomment it though. It's best that you don't take it out of the freezer and put it back in a lot, it effs it up.

What can I do with this frozen chicken?
Q. I am trying to cook some frozen chicken thighs. I can't put it in my oven, because I got grease all in there bad the other day and still need to clean it. So I am trying to cook frozen chicken in a big pot stovetop. I was going to put cream of chicken or cream of something at least in there, b/c since they are frozen I dont' think they would cook well without something for it to simmer in. I can not find cream of anything in there except for cream of potato soup. I also have various tomato sauces, diced tomatos (but I don't think I want to go that direction unless it's my only choice), canned white gravy with sausage, condensed chicken noodle soup and various canned veggies and sourkraut (sp?). I do not see any broth, just canned soup. Oh,… [cont.]

A. Hopefully you have some rice too and an onion - put 2 tablespoons oil in the bottom of a warm pan and bring up the heat add onion and cook until glossy place chicken in pot and reduce heat by half - cover and simmer for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes (hopefully the time it took to cook the rice) add peach pineapple salsa and recover - let simmer 5 minutes more then serve over hot rice. Good Luck!

Any tips for defrosting or cooking frozen chicken in a soup?
Q. I have a half of a roaster chicken frozen and I want to make chicken soup. I have the worst luck defrosting in the microwave (parts end up cooked) and I don't have time to defrost overnight in a fridge. Can I make soup starting with frozen chicken? Any other options (i.e. improve my microwave defrosting skills)? I want to start cooking in like 2-3 hours... Thanks!

A. Submerge the chicken in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes for as long as you can. As soon as it is thawed enough, cut it up and continue thawing. It should be mostly or completely thawed by the time you are ready to start cooking. Bert

A. defrost it in the microwave if you have it, but if you dont you can technically just drop it in a pan without thawing. If you're hungry and want it fast, I personally would just thaw it a bit with running water. Throw it in a little hot grease to thaw it the rest of the way and cook it. Hot grease can flash cook anything. If you want to put BBQ sauce or something, I would cook it most of the way in the pan, while the oven is heating to 400degrees. Take the mostly cooked chicken out of the pan and spread your sauce on all over the chicken and put it in the oven for a few minutes. The oven will bake in the sauce even in just a few minutes. how long is frozen chicken and hamburger meat good for?
Q. I was cleaning out my mother in laws fridge and freezer, and in the process of cleaning out her freezer I found some chicken and hamburger meat that had sell by dates going back to October of 2007. Is this meat safe to keep or should I get rid of it? Its all frozen solid, I just wanted to make sure it was still safe to keep for when she does get around to cooking it.

A. Yeah, defrost it and chow down...as long as its not freezer burned!! As long as it hasn't been in there so long where u can't tell the difference between the chicken and the chop meat. It might have lost a little flavor, but sure, its ok!!

Is it dangerous to refreeze previously frozen chicken?
Q. I will be making a dish today that is to be eaten next week. I know it is not safe to refreeze previously frozen fish, but does the same rule apply for chicken? I have frozen breast halves which I must thaw completely, then flatten them out, add my ingredients, roll up, dip in egg mixture, dip in breading, then roll up, toothpick 'em, and then I would like to refreeze the chicken to eat next week. Any cautions, suggestions, ideas for a safe way to do so?
Asked by angel pie - Thu Sep 18 12:14:51 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The safest way is to cook and consume the chicken right after preparing. Bacteria can grow quickly on any foods that are not stored properly. Nearly as safe would be prep and then cook this week and store the cooked recipe in the fridge (4 days) or in the freezer (3 months) to be eaten later.

How long does it take to defrost a frozen chicken breast?
Q. Hi, I don't have a microwave so how long does it take to defrost a frozen chicken breast by leaving it out of the freezer?
Asked by stardustlost86 - Fri Sep 7 12:21:48 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Thawing the chicken in cold water is a faster method than thawing in the refrigerator, but the proper precautions must be taken when using this thawing method. Fill the sink with enough cold tap water to cover the chicken and place the wrapped chicken in the water. The water should be changed every 30 minutes. Do not use warm water, even though it will thaw the chicken faster, it will also cause the growth of bacteria. Do not use this sink for other purposes during thawing period and be sure the thawing water does not splash onto other preparation surfaces or food. Once the chicken is thawed, remove it from the sink and clean all utensils and surfaces affected during the thawing period with hot water and soap

How do I work out the nutritional value or Iceland frozen chicken breasts?
Q. Basicaly I often buy the 1.5kg bags of frozen chicken breast from iceland. It gives nutritional value per 100g cooked but obviously if I cooked the whole bag I wouldn't have 1.5kg of cooked chicken. What I am trying to work out I suppose is how much 1.5kg weighs out after it is cooked so I can then work the nutritional value per cooked breast. Sorry if that is confusing. Part of the reason I can't find the answer is not knowing what to search for.

How much liquid should be in the slow-cooker with frozen chicken breasts?
Q. We're cooking frozen, boneless, skinless chicken breasts in the crock pot and we just used a giant can of Cream of Chicken soup and a small can of Cheddar Cheese soup. Because the breasts are frozen they're hard to move around and keep under the liquid. Though they're thoroughly coated, they're not completely submerged in liquid. My boyfriend is worried that they'll burn or something like that. Should I be concerned about that, and if so, how should I fix this?

A. As long as they're frozen and you've got 2 soups in there you're fine. As they thaw there will be liquid from the chicken too.

A. With this recipe...I usually use 'frozen' chicken. 1 family size package chicken wings 2 cup catsup 2 - 12oz. can cola (pepsi, coke, etc.) 2- packages McCormicks Buffalo wings seasoning Put chicken in a non-stick pan. Mix together catsup and cola, seasoning .pour over chicken. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and cook 45 minutes. (turning chicken a few times, while cooking...to prevent from sticking to pan) Cook until the sauce becomes thick and adheres to the chicken. It turns into the most incredible BBQ sauce. Yummm! I used the spices from a MILD (I don't care for "HOT") Buffalo Wings packet...(the kind you get to bake in the oven)...I thought it was really good...(but you/I can't find a 'bad' way to fix chicken). This recipe… [cont.]

A. Well you can yes, but it will take alot longer to cook. I always add a quartered onion, a few carrots and celery for flavour, some whole peppercorns also after you skim the top and salt of course. After everything is done, discard the veg cuz they will not have enough flavor left. I like to do this: after the chicken has cooled I remove the meat and set aside. I dice up some more carrots onion and celery and some garlic, i saute this more a few minutes, add the chicken stock and the chicken meat, you can add in rosemary, tarragon, parsely anything herb you like, I then throw in some cooked pasta, check for seasonings and you're done! <3

A. You need to defrost first! so you will have to wait or the outside will burn before the inside is cooked completely Put the wings in a pot of water let them sit a bit to defrost The drain off water ,Pat dry, then you can season/batter and fry Make sure you let the temperature in the fryer to heat up and don't over fill/load the basket you want them to cook all the way through and evenly Be patient I know you are hungry , but you don't want to be eating undercooked burnt chicken wings

How to defrost frozen chicken without microwave?
Q. They are frozen Trader Joes grilled chicken pieces that are fully cooked, just need to be heated. They are like the size you'd see on a caesar salad and the instructions say to thaw and heat in microwave...I don't have one..how else can I do it?

A. If they are sealed in plastic, the cold water answer is actually a good one if you don't have time to let thaw in the refrigerator over night and have no microwave. Put the sealed chicken in a bowl in the sink and fill the bowl with cool water. Leave the sink on so that it is dripping a steady stream of water. This will thaw the chicken fairly quickly. You obviously can't heat the chicken for eating this way, though. If there are no alternative cooking instructions on the box, I'd try baking it in a toaster-oven or an oven, or perhaps on the stove top.
