How do I separate frozen chicken breasts in the package without thawing all five pounds of chicken?
Q. I have a 5 pound Styrofoam package of chicken breasts that I just threw in my freezer yesterday when I got home from the grocery store. Now I want to get one piece without thawing the entire package. How do I separate one piece when they are all frozen together?

A. Carefully, use a knife or a cleaver preferefbly to pry them apart. If you work at it, they will come apart. Ive done this many times. If you have to, just run some hot water over it and that will help too, Then just put the rest right back in the freezer, or go ahead and loosen them all up while you are at it, and put them in seperate baggies, and then refreeze them, They will be fine, because you are not thawing them all the way out, just loosesning up the ice on them

What can I do with this frozen chicken?
Q. I am trying to cook some frozen chicken thighs. I can't put it in my oven, because I got grease all in there bad the other day and still need to clean it. So I am trying to cook frozen chicken in a big pot stovetop. I was going to put cream of chicken or cream of something at least in there, b/c since they are frozen I dont' think they would cook well without something for it to simmer in. I can not find cream of anything in there except for cream of potato soup. I also have various tomato sauces, diced tomatos (but I don't think I want to go that direction unless it's my only choice), canned white gravy with sausage, condensed chicken noodle soup and various canned veggies and sourkraut (sp?). I do not see any broth, just canned soup. Oh,… [cont.]

A. Hopefully you have some rice too and an onion - put 2 tablespoons oil in the bottom of a warm pan and bring up the heat add onion and cook until glossy place chicken in pot and reduce heat by half - cover and simmer for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes (hopefully the time it took to cook the rice) add peach pineapple salsa and recover - let simmer 5 minutes more then serve over hot rice. Good Luck!

Q. I have 2 questions. 1. Can you slow cook a frozen chicken? I have heard that you shouldnt slow cook a small whole frozen chicken. I put in one in my slow cooker and let it cook for 3 hours and have put it on high for the last hour and a half. Will I get sick? 2. Heard you cant put veges with chicken in the cooker. I put frozen beans in with the above. Is true? Please let me know.

A. First of all I think that you probably should have thawed it, because poultry does not always cook evenly. I did this once, and the breast was done, but the dark areas around the joints of the bird were still bloody. If you have a thawed bird, you can throw as many veggies in with it as you like. They might be a little mushy in the slow cooker however.

Any tips for defrosting or cooking frozen chicken in a soup?
Q. I have a half of a roaster chicken frozen and I want to make chicken soup. I have the worst luck defrosting in the microwave (parts end up cooked) and I don't have time to defrost overnight in a fridge. Can I make soup starting with frozen chicken? Any other options (i.e. improve my microwave defrosting skills)? I want to start cooking in like 2-3 hours... Thanks!

A. Submerge the chicken in cold water, changing the water every 30 minutes for as long as you can. As soon as it is thawed enough, cut it up and continue thawing. It should be mostly or completely thawed by the time you are ready to start cooking. Bert

A. It is best to follow the governmental safety standards set by the USDA, the safest being a slow thaw in the refrigerator: Safe Defrosting FSIS recommends three ways to defrost chicken: in the refrigerator, in cold water and in the microwave. Never defrost chicken on the counter or in other locations. It's best to plan ahead for slow, safe thawing in the refrigerator. Boneless chicken breasts will usually defrost overnight. Bone-in parts and whole chickens may take 1 to 2 days or longer. Once the raw chicken defrosts, it can be kept in the refrigerator an additional day or two before cooking. During this time, if chicken defrosted in the refrigerator is not used, it can safely be refrozen without cooking first. Chicken may be defrosted in… [cont.]

A. defrost it in the microwave if you have it, but if you dont you can technically just drop it in a pan without thawing. If you're hungry and want it fast, I personally would just thaw it a bit with running water. Throw it in a little hot grease to thaw it the rest of the way and cook it. Hot grease can flash cook anything. If you want to put BBQ sauce or something, I would cook it most of the way in the pan, while the oven is heating to 400degrees. Take the mostly cooked chicken out of the pan and spread your sauce on all over the chicken and put it in the oven for a few minutes. The oven will bake in the sauce even in just a few minutes. Of course, this is a really quick way to cook them without a microwave. If you had a little… [cont.]

How long can frozen chicken breasts defrost/unthaw in a fridge, and still be ok to cook if left in fridge?
Q. Basically, I had a frozen pack of chicken breasts that I took out of the freezer to defrost in the fridge. I forget about them, and now has been a few days. I'm assuming they are not good to use anymore. Can I still use them?
Asked by Joe D - Thu Jun 28 13:07:59 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I would pitch them so fast that they'd be smoking when they hit the garbage can. Uncooked chicken is salmonella heaven to begin with, and the longer it sits, the worse the bacteria build up is. What makes more sense -- paying five or six dollars to replace a package of chicken breasts or paying five or six thousand dollars for a hospital stay?

A. Thawing the chicken in cold water is a faster method than thawing in the refrigerator, but the proper precautions must be taken when using this thawing method. Fill the sink with enough cold tap water to cover the chicken and place the wrapped chicken in the water. The water should be changed every 30 minutes. Do not use warm water, even though it will thaw the chicken faster, it will also cause the growth of bacteria. Do not use this sink for other purposes during thawing period and be sure the thawing water does not splash onto other preparation surfaces or food. Once the chicken is thawed, remove it from the sink and clean all utensils and surfaces affected during the thawing period with hot water and soap

Quick and Easy Recipe for Boneless, Skinless, Frozen Chicken Breast, with Things I Have on Hand?

A. Brown the chicken breasts in a little olive oil, and once browned cover with cream of whatever soup you have on hand. The cream of whatever soup will make a gravy while cooking with the chicken. Cook until the chicken is tender. Cook the rice, and cook the veggies. Serve the chicken and gravy over the rice, along with the veggies. Open a bottle of Pinot Grigio or some other good white wine, and celebrate his promotion!

A. You need to defrost first! so you will have to wait or the outside will burn before the inside is cooked completely Put the wings in a pot of water let them sit a bit to defrost The drain off water ,Pat dry, then you can season/batter and fry Make sure you let the temperature in the fryer to heat up and don't over fill/load the basket you want them to cook all the way through and evenly Be patient I know you are hungry , but you don't want to be eating undercooked burnt chicken wings

Is there a risk of Salmonella with frozen chicken or beef?
Q. Salmonella is usually associated with raw or improperly cooked fresh poultry, beef and eggs. What about fresh frozen products? I know that Salmonella, if present, can be killed when food is cooked to appropriate temperatures. Will the freezing temperatures of frozen food (such as frozen chicken breasts, etc.) kill Salmonella, as well?

A. no anytime the chicken is in th e raw form either fresh or frozen you still have the potential of salmonella being there. the only way to kill the bateria is by cooking your chicken to at least 165 degrees. then it should be gone.

When slow-cooking frozen chicken breasts in a crock pot, can I stack them up and cook many at once?
Q. My crock pot is fairly large, but I still can only fit about 3 frozen chicken breasts in one layer. I'd like to cook about 8-12 of them at one time (6-9 pounds). Is it fine to stack them up, assuming they are all submerged? If it matters, I intend to cook on low for about 8 hours. Thanks!
Asked by DM - Sat Dec 20 01:00:11 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Not a good idea. You want the water up to temp quickly or you are creating a nice warm bath for bacteria to multiply like crazy. Even though the hot water would kill the bacteria eventually, there are some nuero-toxins created as a byproduct of the bacteria multiplying that are not destroyed by heat. I would strongly recommend that you give them about 20-25 minutes in a 350 F oven, then transfer them to the crock and add boiling water. It is more than your crock can safely handle from frozen or raw. But the headstart in the oven and boiling water will get you into the safe zone quickly. Using the oven first gives them more flavor too.
